Welcome to Funtasia First Steps Nursery, how it all began

Funtasia had a vision to build on their Outstanding Before and After school clubs, a vision to provide a family environment whereby young children could be nurtured, educated and cherished in a loving environment by highly qualified and experienced practitioners.

In 2016 we extended St Paul’s provision to offer Pre School, within a month the setting was inspected by Ofsted and received an outstanding judgment. The demand for places and the feedback received from parents was such that in May 2018 we decided to extend our provision.

New premises were found in Millbrook just two miles from the original provision. In June 2018 contractors began converting the old dentist and chemist into a modern day care provision. The doors to the new 44 place nursery were opened in September 2018 and existing children moved from St Paul’s and the pre - school closed.

The philosophy of the nursery is always; “ Making those first steps count, “ This is echoed throughout the nursery every day. Children follow their own interests, outlined in the Early Years Foundation Stage, and develop the building blocks for the 'next steps' in their learning. Children learn through play both indoors and outdoors (in all weathers putting on their coats and wellies, or sunglasses and sunhats). We regularly visit the country park, which is on our doorstep, nature walks, Welly walks and den building is just some of the outdoor experiences the children take part in. There is always a suitable balance of child initiated and adult led learning practice

Karen Sanderson
Managing Director

I am Karen, Managing Director and founder of Funtasia Kids Clubs. I am a mum to four daughters, grandma to Scarlett and soon to be new grandson. I love my job and would not change it for the world. I came into early years after volunteering at my eldest daughters playgroup in the early 90s. Early years has changed so much since that time. We now know how precious children’s early childhood development is for their life long learning and for the adult they will become.

I am passionate about early years and making a difference to young children and families, I strive to evaluate and make constant improvements to ensure we never become complacent.

I love knowing that we make a difference, every day. I feel very proud of what my team achieve every day and often at the big events that we hold, like ‘graduation’ carnival or Christmas parties I will look around and think, ‘Wow, we do a great job!’ I always feel it’s important to tell the team that too!

I love it when I am in the settings and a child says, ‘Can I have story?’ or ‘Come and play?’ Its just lovely.

Karla Headdock
Deputy Manager

Hello, my name is Karla and I am the manager of Funtasia First Steps Nursery. After qualifying and gaining my BA honours degree in primary teaching, I spent 5 years teaching all ages in the primary school from Nursery- year 6. I loved teaching but decided I wanted a change so I moved to Funtasia and managed the pre-school for 7 months before moving to manage the nursery. I absolutely love the change and realise how important teaching children from such an early age impacts their lives. I am passionate, dedicated and hard working and make sure that all children in my care receive, not only the best education, but also that they feel safe, happy and valued as the individual they are. I believe that children learn best when they are engaged and interested which is why at Funtasia First Steps Nursery we ensure that all planning in based around the children's interests. We aim to give the children everything they need to explore, investigate and succeed in life as we know how important the first years of a child's life are- we make those First Steps count.

Kim Bowers
Operational Manager

Hello my name is Kim, I’m a mum of 3 girls and a nana to my granddaughter. When I’m not working I enjoy spending time with my family and making happy memories. I have worked for Funtasia for 8 years in which time I have grown within the company. Starting from a play worker to deputy and then from there to manager / the companys operational manager.

Whilst working at St. Paul’s along with myself, the team and Karen we have achieved and are recognised as an outstanding setting in all areas. Following our success we acquired a pre school at St. Paul’s church before seeking premises to create our very own nursery, Funtasia first steps.

The nursery has been a great success for myself and the Funtasia team and I’m extremely excited and passionate about my new role at managing and being part of the management team at the nursery. Here’s to an outstanding future. Kim x

  • Fantastic set up with wonderful staff that care for and look after your children superbly. My daughter was always excited and happy to go to Funtasia and built extremely good relationships with the staff making it easy for me to leave her knowing she was safe and happy.

  • I have been using funtasia now for many years. All three of my children have spent time with the funtasia team. GREAT environment, fantastic activities and beautifully warm and welcoming staff. I couldn't recommend funtasia even nearly enough. They are truly amazing. Here's to many more years

  • I wanted my son to develop his own independence away from me, to build his confidence, to learn a positive teacher/pupil relationship and for him to make friends in a fun, gentle and encouraging environment. All of which he has done in abundance with the love, attention and support of all the staff at Funtasia, who treat all the children like part of their own family. Communication between parents/guardians and staff is always open and encouraged. I would wholeheartedly recommend Funtasia First Steps to any parent looking for a nursery/preschool setting for their baby/child

  • Although Seren is too little to tell me, I can see for myself what an amazing time she is having. The way her face lights up as we walk through the door, the way she beams and smiles at you all (and how she barely notices that I leave
